I sit alone in my cell at Arkham Asylum. The soft yellow glow of light bulbs beam across me, illuminating my new homesterile and empty, save for a small bed, along with a toilet and sink. The extent of my possessions consists of toiletries and the stiff, thin blankets on my bed; I am not allowed the luxury of owning a book, a journal, or even a newspaper. It has been months since I have slid my finger across a piece of paper, months since I have devoured a word.
I leave my cell only to bathe. The guards watch me as I stand underneath the shower head, my body naked and exposed before them. I rinse the cheap soap off my skin as quickly as possible, my hair matted to my forehead. Sometimes I can hear them laughing quietly, snickering amongst themselves. To them, I was once Dr. Jonathan Crane, head psychiatrist at Arkham. Now they know me as Jonathan Crane, Patient Number #7942. AscensionGotham moonlight fills Dr. Jonathan Crane's small bedroom as he lies in bed, his fully-clothed body still, save for the small movements of his chest as it rises and falls in rhythm with his breathing. His eyes are closed, but he is not asleep; he is thinking, contemplative, his mind a succession of thoughts aching to be recognizedeach idea yearns to be studied and analyzed, craving to be put into motion.
There is one thought, one idea in particular, that refuses to be ignored, continuously gnawing at his brain with impatience; he knows that it will not go away until he has dutifully performed the necessary task. Every waking moment is dedicated to this thought; it was not long before it began to seep into his dreams as well, infecting his sleep with torment and demands.
The thought scares him. He has not underestimated its finality; once it has been carried o
His command is not harsh, nor demanding; his voice is soft, barely above a whisper, yet it still manages to fill the dark, cold cell, his words floating down the abandoned cell block halls, echoing through the basement.
No, it is not cruel, but it is a command all the same.
Teagan looks up at Crane as she cradles the syringe in her hand, holding it with the utmost care and delicacy she can muster.
"I don't know if I can do it," she whispers timidly, her cheeks hot with embarrassment and shame.
He's depending on her. She's the only other person who knows about his plans, the only other person who can help him, and right now she's disappointing him, letting him down in the worst way possible.
He's given her so much, so very mucha new outlook, a new home, a new life. He's enlightened her in ways no one else could possibly began to imagine, showed her things no one else has ever seen, and she can't even do this simple task for him.
A fresh wave of shame washes over her. I
